As America celebrates its 250th birthday this week, much of the national conversation has centered on how divided we’ve become. It’s easy to focus on the headlines and wonder what, if anything, still brings us together.
I think the answer is closer to home than we sometimes realize.
Across the Mahoning Valley and beyond, nonprofit organizations bring together people with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives around a shared purpose. Volunteers pack food boxes. Staff members welcome families into shelters, classrooms, community centers, and summer programs. Residents, businesses, foundations, and neighbors support efforts that make their communities stronger, healthier, and more connected.
We don’t have to agree on everything to agree on some things that matter deeply: children deserve opportunities, families deserve support, veterans deserve care, and communities deserve places where people can learn, gather, heal, create, and thrive.
Our nation’s story isn’t written only in Washington. It’s written in neighborhoods, schools, food pantries, shelters, arts spaces, camps, and community organizations across the country.
