YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Youngstown State University was the recent recipient of a $50,000 Norfolk Southern grant aimed at improving accessibility and inclusion.
YSU applied for and was granted funds for an ADA-compliant transportation cart to help people with mobility assistance devices — such as wheelchairs — have greater access to the different areas of campus.
“We were just really pleased to see when Youngstown State University Foundation applied,” said Kristin Wong, director of Community Impact for Norfolk Southern. “We were really pleased to see that they were really focusing on providing an inclusive and accessible campus for all of their students and visitors and staff.”

The open-application grant programs were launched in 2023 to support organizations that promote safe and sustainable operations and develop the local workforce in the 22 states where Norfolk Southern operates.
“We feel really strongly about the role that we play in supporting the communities where we operate and we’re across 22 different states, and we wanted to make sure that we were supporting all of those communities,” Wong said. “This grant program really is about providing all those organizations equal access to apply for that support, to apply for that funding.”
Applications for the Thriving Communities and Safety First grants will reopen April 1 and accept submissions until Sept. 1, 2025.
Wong said last year, the grant program awarded over $700,000 in Ohio alone.
